Some Useful Terms Defined

MAT – Montgomery Arts Theater.  Main performance hall on campus.

Black Box – Theater on the 2nd floor of the historic building of the school.  Used mainly by the theater cluster.

ARTS Pass – Way for parents, students, faculty and supporters to donate to the clusters and pay for performing arts events in advance, like a season pass to certain performances during the year.  To these certain performances, the ARTS Pass will admit 4 people into those shows.

Dance Guild – Membership group that strives to promote, foster and support the Dance Cluster and dance students at BTWHSPVA.

Crew Hours – Crew hours are required each semester and will be graded according to the number of hours completed; this grade will be 20% of the last six weeks for each semester for ballet classes and 20% of the last six weeks for each semester for modern classes.  Crew hours may only be earned through approved BTWHSPVA Dance Department events; hours earned volunteering or performing for organizations other than the Dance Department will not be accepted.  Crew opportunities are posted on the dance call board.  For more information on crew hours and grading, see the Dance Handbook as posted on Ms. Weiss’ website (http://teachersites.schoolworld.com/webpages/AWeiss/).

Master Classes – special classes offered randomly during the year where nationally known teachers/choreographers come to the school as guests to offer classes.

Dance Ensembles – Four unique ensemble/company groups (African Dance Ensemble, Luna Del Sol/Ballet Folklorico, Repertory Dance Company I, and Repertory Dance Company II), which allow students to perform and serve as student ambassadors for the dance department and the school.  Must audition to gain membership in the ensemble/company, agree to a one-year commitment of rehearsals and performances, achieve passing grades in both academic and dance classes.  Auditions held in the spring each school year.

All School Collaborative Concert – Concert performed at the beginning of the semester with all the clusters.  Auditions are held when school starts and is open to all grade levels.

Portraits Dance Concert – Performance featuring all dance seniors in their audition solos for College/Senior Showcase.

College/Senior Showcase – Seniors in dance, music, theatre and visual arts present their portfolios, gallery exhibition, performances, individual presentations and technical layouts to an audience of colleges, universities and conservatories in their quest for admission, scholarship and college degrees in their chosen fields.  Annual event held in November each school year.

College Fair – Annual event open to all students and parents. Held on Friday afternoon of Senior Showcase week.  Colleges host tables with brochure and catalogue information as well as answering questions and providing additional information to parents and students.

Evening of Dance – Performances during College/Senior Showcase week that includes all ensembles, as well as other performances.

Faculty Concert – Show of performances choreographed by dance faculty members.  Students audition to be in the pieces.

Senior Project Choreography Brown Bag – Performances choreographed by dance seniors for their final project and it is performed by dance students who have auditioned and been cast by the seniors to perform their choreography.

On Stage at the MAT -Spring Concert presented by the Dance Cluster featuring all ensembles and any open audition pieces.

Best of Senior Choreography - Those Seniors who received a 95 or higher on their choreography juries to present their pieces to an audience.

Repertory Workshop Showcase – An evening of performances by students in all dance classes offered at BTW whether they are a Dance Major or not.  This performance is held at the end of the school year, usually in May.

Jury Exams – These are final exams for the dance classes and are 25% of the semester grade.  The students learn a combination of steps to show their skills and grades are given based on the performance.  For more information on grading, see the Dance Handbook as posted on Ms. Weiss’ website (http://teachersites.schoolworld.com/webpages/AWeiss/).

PTSA – Parent Teacher Student Association.  Organization designed to promote and encourage parent participation, support of the school and support of the faculty.

SBDM – Site Based Decision Making.  Committee that works with school administration to help make decisions and implement programs in all areas of the school.

TOTA – Taste of the Arts.  Annual school-wide fundraiser, usually held in the spring.  Includes a silent auction.  Performances by all Clusters (by audition only) are presented at this venue.

PTSA Arts Gala – Annual PTSA fundraising event, usually held in the spring.  Includes silent and live auctions.

Call Board – Bulletin board on the south side of the dance studios on the lowest level of the school on which information about auditions, crew hours, senior/college matters, and other dance-related postings are made.
